Making It Real: Veterans Day Bill Passes Oregon Senate, Heads for the House

Tuesday, May 3, 2011

The Oregon Senate unanimously approved a bill allowing U.S. Military veterans the day off from work each Veterans Day. Known as Senate Bill 2, it would allow veterans to take Veterans Day off while giving employers the option of whether that time would be paid or unpaid.

The legislation was created after constituent Lucy Van Oort asked Senate President, Peter Courtney, D-Salem, why state workers received the day off on Veterans Day, while many veterans have to work. Van Oort, whose late husband was a Vietnam veteran, had noted it was hard to understand why he always had to work.

“If we are going to honor our veterans, let’s honor them. Let’s give them the day off work,” said Van Oort.

Senator Alan Olsen, R-Canby, who carried the bill to the floor, stated, “November 11 is a federal holiday. Government offices at all levels are closed. Macy’s even has an 18-hour sale to celebrate. It’s ironic that those who have served their country in our armed forces don’t get the day off.”

The SB 2 would require veterans to make the request for the day off in advance with their employers, as well as provide documentation of their veteran status. However, the request can be denied if the employee being absent would create undue hardship, threaten public safety or cause an operational hazard.

The bill, modeled after an Iowa law that was adopted and in place for Veterans Day 2010, is set for House consideration next.

As a United States veteran, you are entitled to receive veteran education benefits at Allied Schools for the valuable service you provided. Allied can help you!
